Winter is here! Snow, ice, warm fireplace, cozy blankets, hot cocoa and dry skin, oh my.</div>

This is winter here in the New England area, dry, wet cold and is a challenge for our skin over the long winter months.</div>

What to do? Well Ayurveda has this under control! </div>

A few ways Ayurveda helps in the winter:</div>

<li>Eating warm grounding foods</li>
</ul>
Do you remember when you where young and your mother or grandmother would make a stew or pot pie and left you feeling full and loved. Relaxing with warm foods in the cold dry weather helps keep you feel comfort, grounded and nourished through food. Nourishing foods keep the body strong,healthy and balanced the immune system.<br /><ul>
<li>Add ghee to your diet </li>
</ul>
Ghee is the perfect winter soother. Ghee can be added to your foods to help lubricate the joints and moisten dry skin. Massaging the skin, lips, dry areas to relax, soothe and lubricate the skin and leave you glowing.<br /><ul>
<li>get outside, but layer properly</li>
</ul>
Getting outside, fresh air, reconnecting to the elements are key to a strong immune system. Layering for the weather properly will protect the areas of delicate skin, such as neck, hands. Bundle up and get out their.<br /><ul>
<li>take time to meditate or do regular yoga</li>
</ul>
Creating your relaxation routine, doing daily meditation, yoga, walking or stretching will help relax the mind and keep the immune system in balance.<br /><ul>
<li>and self abhyanga,</li>
</ul>
Self Abhyanga! This is one of my favorite winter tips. Taking a little time every morning to apply oil to the body will help relax and strengthen the immune system. Place an old towel down on your bathroom floor, warm some oil, then apply to the body starting at the head then working slowly down the body, spending extra time at the ears and feet.<br />
<br />
Spending a little time with self care in the long winter months will help to create a smoother winter, and softer skin.<br />

It just had this happen this week. My client came in, we were talking about self-care, I had suggested that she take some time and do something nice for herself. The next afternoon, I had a client come in for a massage, when I asked her what brought her in, she said," My body was telling me this is what it needed". She took the time to listen to herself.<br />
<br />
It seems so simple. I do my mediation, and do my herbals, for me its keeping up with my yoga and doing the gentle pampering s of taking time that I forget. So for me, it was a foot scrub! I am either on my feet or using my feet in my Thai yoga massage, and they sometimes yell for a nice foot scrub.<br />
<br />
So that's just what I did, a nice eucalyptus sugar scrub followed up with a tea tree lotion bar. My feet have been saying thank you all day.<br />

With the summer heat in the high 80's to 90's, it's hot out their.<br />
<br />
At Metta Wellness I look to Ayurveda for tips on staying cool during the summer heat.<br />
This summer has been one for looking at many tools to keep cool since we are not accustom to the heat for the amount of time we have had this summer. Even for me, loving this heat, I had to go to some of my cooling tips from Ayurveda.<br />
<br />
So, let me share with you some of the ways that I have stayed cool this summer:<br />
<ul>
<li> <a href="https://www.blogger.com/%3Ca%20target=%22_blank%22%20href=%22https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=mettawellne0f-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=c919ed4ada45b8b97dbca851e4aea898&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=hpc&keywords=organic%20coconut%20oil%22%3Ecool%20down%3C/a%3E%3Cimg%20src=%22//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=mettawellne0f-20&l=ur2&o=1%22%20width=%221%22%20height=%221%22%20border=%220%22%20alt=%22%22%20style=%22border:none%20!important;%20margin:0px%20!important;%22%20/%3E" target="_blank">Coconut oil</a>, apply coconut oil to my feet and face to keep the skin hydrated and cool. You could add in some <a href="https://www.doterra.com/US/en/site/mettawellness" target="_blank">essential oils</a> to bring in a calming effect.</li>
<li><a href="https://squareup.com/store/metta-wellness-herbals" target="_blank">Blueberry nettle tea</a>: this tea is refreshing and energizing tea. I like to make this tea, let it set at room temperature then add in frozen blueberries to keep the tea cool, not cold. I will switch this out with <a href="https://squareup.com/store/metta-wellness-herbals" target="_blank">hibiscus cooler</a>, just as cooling.</li>
<li>Earthing, this is one I like to do in the late morning or early in the evening before the bugs take over. Earthing is simply a way to reconnect and stay grounded and when the temperatures get hot, we need to stay calm and grounded. Earthing is simply being outside, a nice grassy shaded spot is perfect, take your shoes off and let yourself connect with the earth.</li>
<li>Light cooling foods,sounds easy! But with cookouts and summer parties, not as easy. Breads, fried foods and sorry, yes beer are all heating. So planning is key, having light easy foods most of the time, then enjoy when you have your cookouts, parties, etc.</li>
</ul>

With the summer heat,outdoor sports and picnics, theirs nothing better then to cool down with a massage! Keeping the body cool during the summer months helps with balancing the emotions, sleep patterns, cooling the skin and overall ease of the summer months.<br />
<br />
Cooling the body with massage can be done at home by adding essential oils to coconut or jojoba oil and apply to the body at least once a week. If doing a self massage does not fit into your routine, you can book a cooling summer massage, or apply your massage or the the feet and back of the neck to bring in some cooling.<br />
<br />
Not sure where to start with your cooling massage oil? I would go with coconut, aloe or jojoba oil and add lavender & rosemary essential oil, orange & peppermint or chamomile & sandalwood, any of those combinations will bring in a cooling along with grounding to help the mind and body during the summer months.<br />

In this world of busy, fast pace, high stress day to day life we live, having ways to relax is key.<br />

Relaxing the body seems simple, but the effects on the mind and body has a ripple effect. The impact of our daily lives can cause the body, mind to be overwhelmed or feel tired. The long term stress can cause other issues for the body, headaches, auto immune issues, problems with sleep, moods can be off.<br />

This is where the power of relaxation tools come in. Doing daily meditation, healthy eating, herbal teas, exercise and yes, massage. Giving the body this space to calm brings in a natural healing, a balance allowing the system to come back into its whole(whole= mind, body, spirit connection) self.<br />

Stress will effect sleep, digestion, work performance, reaction time and over time cause issues with memory, anxiety, mood and can lead to auto immune disorders. This becomes a vicious cycle, stress, sleep disturbance, imbalance through out your daily life, then it starts over again.<br />

In Ayurveda we focus on the root and <a href="https://www.yogajournal.com/lifestyle/know-stress-type" target="_blank">how to balance</a>. The key is patience and allowing yourself the time to recreate the cycle you have been in,to teach the body a new story.<br />

This has been a practice for me this past year. Learning to trust in self is key to allowing my personal and <a href="http://www.mettawellness.net/" target="_blank">business</a> to continue to move forward and grow.<br />
<br />
As we move out of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwyKleZsMQQ&fbclid=IwAR24LS8mzSbKcBl_syaeS-pxPCEE1Di6qGXcs_20EwwF_T0ePGXmgxDWqKk" target="_blank">2018 and are into 2019</a>, we where welcomed with an incredible lunar eclipse of the blood wolf moon. This is energetically a time to stop and reboot, to speak to your true self.<br />
<br />
In this past year, I moved my business from one location to another location while opening a second location and launching my herbal business into the public online world. While it is all very exciting and quite the learning (and yes mistakes where made, but those are to learn from also), growing and self expansion.<br />
<br />
During this growth, I had to learn to trust. Trusting my self, could I do this, how will my clients respond, can I grow enough business and do I have a strong enough support team to make this happen.<br />
<br />
Well here I am, three and a half months in, and taking stock in self, that 'Yes" I can do this. Now, I have not said that I expect this to be easy, I am learning and trusting the process as I move through this journey. Some people will walk this path with me and others will find their own path.<br />
<br />
Each time I stop and reflect on this blessing that is here, this work, my <a href="https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-16692/the-5-paths-to-discovering-your-dharma.html" target="_blank">dharma </a>, I say thank you, and I look inward and take a breath and say, yes, I trust in this process, I am living my truth.<br />
<br />
Learning to trust in self is allowing yourself to open up to whatever is in front of you, no fear, regrets, just allow the path to unfold and to trust in this.<br />

For me, I see that we all want, or strive to live in peace, harmony and balance with ourselves and the world around us. Hi everyone, Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) teacher Rick Rocha here at Metta Wellness.<br />

Start the New Year off with something new. If you have ever been curious about what Taijiquan is, this is a good place to begin. I will be teaching a course for beginners at Metta just after the New Year. This is a 6 week course, held on Saturdays from 10am to 11:30am. The course begins Jan. 5th through Feb. 9th. All adults welcome to register. The classes are simple to understand and you do not need to be athletic. Taijiquan uses gentle, simple movements to improve the body as well as the mind. You will learn a short Taijiquan form, Meridian Qigong and maybe even a little Mandarin Chinese.<br />

So what is Ayurveda?<br />

I get this question a lot, or I hear - Ayurveda is to complicated. Yes, Ayurveda can be complicated, but I don't feel it should be and doesn't have to be.<br />
<br />
Lets dive into Ayurveda.<br />
First, how did I get to Ayurveda, lets go back a little ways. In 2006, I started my training at the Maharishi Ayurveda Center in Lancaster, MA. I had just finished a program at Dana Farber with Energy work and massage for cancer clients, when I started the training at the Ayurvedic center. The similarities between the two made for the perfect transition. Both looked at the importance of balance, digestion, proper sleep and the positive outlook of the emotions. As I dove into Ayurveda it was clear that being in balance with yourself and your environment effected every element of health. This was the beginning of a path in a holistic lifestyle.<br />
<br />
Ayurveda, lets dive deeper.<br />
Ayurveda is one of the oldest known healing systems dating back thousands of years to India. This system was practiced and then handed down though families that would have trained their entire lives, and then taken over as the town Vaidya( Ayurvedic practitioner or Dr). This was a healing method with much similarities to TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine), they pull in the full body, emotional and spirit connection. Ayurveda has many branches of healing when working with you, from yoga, meditation, massage and herbs to create a whole body in balance.<br />
<br />
Over time, with families shifting, moving, along with environmental and government changes, much of the practice was lost. This is now changing, we are revisiting these traditional techniques and bringing them into our modern world.<br />
<br />
I will start to share with you in the coming week ways to add Ayurveda into your daily routine and how some of the ways Ayurveda was applied still ring true today. <br />

In the space around, and in my own world, energies are shifting. This shift gives room for change, for personal and spiritual growth. Making room for new space and allowing old thoughts and patterns to melt away and expand your true self.<br />
<br />
As the seasons change, the heat of the summer shifts to damp cool fall weather, the natural world prepares for changes. The trees pull in the energy, prepare to settle back inward through the cold winter months and so its the same with animals in the wild. This is the time for moving with the change and settling into self to prepare for whats to come.<br />
<br />
Like the busy bee from flower to flower, I have been shifting, jumping from working to preparing, from Shrewsbury to Paxton. Paxton is now open, and I am moving with this change and preparing to settle in with my space.<br />
<br />
The next few months I will learn, as Shrewsbury has been up and running, and now <a href="http://www,mettawellness.net/" target="_blank">Paxton</a> has joined. We will learn how and grow as we settle into the months ahead and find balance in both Shrewsbury and Paxton.<br />
<br />
The energy moves and shifts around us everyday and with the seasons, take your time in your own self. Give space to the energies of change to allow yourself to move and flow in calm.<br />

This is a journey! As we reach the starting point of this next step, a new journey, self care is in my view this weekend.<br />

This weekend we will be doing the final projects in the new Paxton space, before the clean up and placing furniture! This is the time that I step back and breath, and do a self massage with <a href="https://amzn.to/2MXdE47" target="_blank">coconut oil</a><br />
to keep the body cool and hydrated during the busy time.<br />

<a href="https://amzn.to/2MXdE47" target="_blank">Coconut oil</a> has many benefits, and when used for massage brings the balance inward. Coconut oil not only smells great, but goes onto the body easily. I prefer to use a raw coconut oil, and scoop it right out of the jar and start applying it to the body. The easiest way for self massage is to place an old towel down, start at the head and just work your way down the body, sitting on your towel at the end to get into the feet.<br />

Like the Mantra on my foot, it is the lotus coming up from the mud, patience, and beauty comes through. This is for me powerful. Metta Wellness stands for "loving kindness", with the lotus this is always a symbol for me that working through and staying on your path beauty opens.<br />

<a href="http://www.mettawellness.net/" target="_blank">Metta Wellness</a> has been in a process of change, always moving forward, learning, and exploring along the way. As we moved into a new location, adding a second location and launching Metta Herbals into the online market and general public. Change, patience, and trust is my Mantra for this opening.<br />
<br />
Lets step back a little. In May Metta Wellness moved into its new location in Shrewsbury,calming, easily located and just the right size. This space also allows for the growth in Metta Wellness and Herbals. Taking time to set up and shift into this space (still organizing a few small details), adjusting and refocusing on the space and the path for Metta Wellness & Herbals. Change was our Mantra in May, from a space we had relaxed into for two years to a new space on our own.<br />
<br />
Now we are nearing the next space, a larger home in Paxton, where we can add and explore our wellness space.In the next week we will be finishing up the first part of Paxton, with a waiting area, 2 treatment rooms, an office, and with an herbal kitchen soon following. As we prepare to start laying the space out, decorating I will hold off on posting pictures till we are ready to welcome you in.<br />
<br />
This space has been a process of learning, growing and understanding that taking your time and breathing through this process, being true to what you feel, or see as your vision for your life's work is all worth it. I feel a great privilege and honor to have this space, the friends that we have and you for your continual support.<br />

Welcome summer!<br />
I love the heat, I love the summer. This does not mean I always enjoy a heating massage on a 90 degree day.<br />

Keeping up with your wellness routine throughout the year can be a challenge, but heat should not be one of them. At <a href="http://www.mettawellness.net/" target="_blank">Metta Wellness</a> I work to bring in elements, to you and your massage, to help balance with the seasons and each person on an individual bases.When the weather heats up, most of my clients are looking for ways to stay cool, I have just the massage for that.<br />

With a blend of coconut oil to hydrate and cool the body, Aloe oil to also cool down the body, balance the heaviness of the coconut and relieve any dry itchy sun(or bug) damaged skin. With this cooling blend of oils you can then add in essential oils during the massage to create your personal massage and to enhance the effects of this massage. Summer is on it's way(okay that's what the calendar says)!<br />

With the summer comes, festivals, fairs and so many great events to get outside and shop local. Metta Wellness is your home for holistic healing, a space to create and keep you on your wellness routine. Metta Herbal is a branch of the herbal side of the wellness. We created Metta Herbals from a growing interest in the tea blends, capsules, oils and lotions that I create for my clients. With the growing herbal side, we created the branch of Metta Herbal to blend what I do in the office, with what people are asking for. Metta Herbal takes the most requested blends and shares them with you for your everyday, as a gift, to share or to relax at home with.<br />

Metta Herbal is getting ready for the summer with spring teas, magnesium lotions, massage oils and preparing for summer fairs.<br />

Wow!<br />
These last two months have been crazy, overwhelming, exciting and powerful.<br />
<br />
We started this journey in 2005 when I finished and stepped away from massage school and entered the world of holistic healing with massage. Since I finished school I have continued to study, learn and train with different healing modalities from massage, meditation, herbs and always my clients.<br />
<br />
In 2012 with the closing of Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center, it gave me the push to step out and work for myself. Since 2012 it has been a journey from working with and inside of a meditation center to a wellness space and now moving into my own. From each space, this journey has been so powerful, from the people I have meet, worked with and watched, I have learned so much. Now as I enter into my own, I am so thankful for the journey and the people I have in my life. The support team Metta Wellness has, we have already succeeded, its now time to bring this dream to reality. <br />
<br />
So what is coming next! As this new journey starts, you will see me come back to my blog, sharing again on facebook and setting up classes in the new location.<br />
I have a Shrewsbury location inside the historic "George Allen Home" at 621 Main St, Unit 10, where you can book a massage, Thai yoga, herbal consult or grab your bag of herbal tea.<br />
In the summer of 2018 we will open a second(larger) location in Paxton, Ma! This location is in the works, lease is signed, contractors are in , painters are lined up and now it's just time! This space will be the perfect layout for massage, Ayurveda, healing classes and an herbal space. We are hoping to have this as a community holistic and healing center.<br />

Ayurveda is about the practice of prevention. When we look at the root of the issue, we work to find a balance as we move forward. Ayurveda takes where you are today, what are the areas of your dosha(your body type through your constitution)and looks at creating balance.<br />
<br />
We can start with prevention today and bring in a balance to help decrease some of the issues now and later. Looking at ways to find a balance through massage, meditation, yoga herbs and daily routine we can focus on prevention.<br />
<br />
This is what I love about Ayurveda. Looking at what is going on when a client comes in , looking for the root cause and how to create balance for that person.A lung issue or inflammation, its not just an issue, it is directing you to find the root, how you got the inflammation. Ayurveda looks at you, your dosha as an individual and works with you to find the areas that may be out of balance and ways to strengthen before the issue arises, or is fully out of balance. Ayurveda is the practice of prevention.<br />

Lets practice some prevention and work to bring in balance for long term through Ayurveda.<br />
